Rupert Ansell

Gunner, Honourable Artillery Company

Rupert Ansell attended Alleyn’s until 1909 before deciding to enlist in the British Expeditionary Force when war broke out in August 1914. After being attested, he joined the Honourable Artillery Company as a gunner and left England to serve overseas. During his time with the HCA, he provided essential artillery support to the advancing British infantry in battle. Rupert served with the BEF until being wounded in battle in 1916. He returned to England and later died of his injuries on 10th December 1916. He is buried at Brookwood Cemetery, a burial site for servicemen and women who had died in the London district during the war.
