Leonard Frederick Avila

Rifleman, London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles)

Leonard Frederick Avila attended Alleyn's until 1904. He joined the war effort in 1914 as part of the London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles) and saw service overseas with the regiment in France and Flanders. In late 1914, Leonard was involved in the Allied Winter Operations in Ypres which attempted to fix the German Army to their front. It was during these operations that he was killed in action on 4th December 1914, at the age of 17. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders.
