John Ellis Bishop

2nd Lieutenant, London Regiment

John Ellis Bishop was a student at Alleyn’s until 1908 and lived at 24 Claverdale Road, Tulse Hill. After the outbreak of war, he joined the British Expeditionary Force as part of the London Regiment. John served overseas in France and Flanders as a 2nd Lieutenant and was involved in the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917. As the British prepped for the advance on Passchendaele, John led a small patrol into No Man’s Land to determine the geographic characteristics of the land and obtain information on enemy movements. John was killed as he returned from his mission on September 21st 1917. He has no known grave and so is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial in Ypres.
