George Raworth Brierley

2^nd Lieutenant, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry

George Raworth Brierley lived at 86 Harlescott Road, Waverly Park and attended Alleyn’s until 1913. He joined the war effort as part of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and served as a 2^nd Lieutenant on the Western Front in France and Flanders. During his service, George was involved in the minor operations that took place near Wancourt in preparation Battle of Arras in 1917. During this action, the King’s Own had the task of capturing the trenches between Wancourt and Feuchy and defending them against any German counter-attacks. After leading his battalion in action, George was wounded in April 1917. He was transferred from the front to hospital but later died of his injuries on May 1^st 1917. He is buried at Warlincourt Halte Burial Cemetary in France.
