Herbert Thomas Broderick

Herbert Thomas Broderick lived at 5 Minden Road, Anerley and attended Alleyn's until 1909. After leaving school, he joined the war effort as part of the London Regiment and served in Jerusalem as a Lieutenant. At the start of 1917, the Jerusalem operations were plagued by inactivity as the British failed to force the Ottoman Army to withdraw. Fighting for the city finally broke out on November 17th 1917.This later became known as The Battle of Jerusalem and saw the Ottoman Army surrender on December 30th 1917. Herbert was heavily involved in this action and was wounded in battle while defending a position in the Jerusalem defences on December 27th. He died of his injuries two days later and is buried at the Jerusalem War Cemetery.
