Samuel Carnaby
Private, South African Coastal Force
Samuel Carnaby studied at Alleyn's until 1899 before moving to South Africa. When war broke out in August 1914, he joined the South African Coastal Force which formed part of the South African Division of the Royal Naval Reserve. The naval base at Simons Town in South Africa played a strategic role to the Allies during the war and the coastal force had the role of defending the base from any attack. Simon was killed while carrying out his duty with the South African Coastal Force during wartime.
