George Herbert Clark

Buff's Regiment

George Herbert Clark, was born on 17th June 1895 and attended Alleyn’s School from 1906 until March 1914. His father was Herbert Thomas Clark, who worked for the Post Office in Wandsworth. George was in “The Buffs” regiment, but while he contributed to the war effort he did not see active service because of a knee issue.

While at Alleyn’s he played Rugby Fives and continued his association with the school through the Old Boys’ cricket club. When he died in June 1948, a cup called the George Clark Cup for Rugby Fives Intermediate Singles champion was set up at the school. It was first played for in 1949 and was still awarded in 1959.

After the First World War George joined the Civil Service and in his role as an accountant he was greatly involved in the setting up of the NHS. He married a JAGS old girl in 1920, and his son Brian Clark briefly attended Alleyn’s before going to Dulwich College. His family continue to live in Dulwich.
