Walter J. Cleave

Private, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Rifles)

Walter J. Cleave was a student at Alleyn's until 1913. After the outbreak of war in August 1914, he joined the Queen's (Royal West Surrey Rifles) and served overseas in France and Flanders. Walter was serving with the regiment on the Western Front in March 1918 when the German Army launched their final bid for victory with the Spring Offensive. He went missing during this time of chaos and confusion on the front and was later assumed to have been killed on April 1st 1918. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in France.
