Samuel Maxwell Coleman

Lance Corporal, London Regiment (Queen's Westminster Rifles)

Samuel Maxwell Coleman was a student at Alleyn's until 1906 and lived in Lenham, Kent before the outbreak of war. He joined the war effort as part of the London Regiment (Queen's Westminster Rifles) and served overseas on the Western Front. Samuel saw service in France and was involved in action at Wancourt in April 1917 and at Vimy in May 1918. He was wounded during both of these actions but recovered from his injuries and returned to serve with his regiment at the front in 1918. In August, Samuel took part in the Allied offensives that were launched on the Western Front after the failure of the German Spring Offensive. He was killed in action at Croisilles on August 28^th 1918 and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial in France.
