Leslie H. Coombs

Leslie H. Coombs lived in Dulwich before the outbreak of war in August 1914. He joined the war effort as part of the Royal Fusiliers and served overseas in France in 1916. His brother, Frank M. Coombs, was also serving in France at this time as part of the London Rifle Brigade. Both brothers served as machine gunners and took part in the major British operation on the Somme in July 1916. On July 12th 1916, Leslie was wounded in battle and later died of his injuries as the British attempted to push forward. His brother, Frank, was killed in action on the first day of the battle on July 1st. Leslie is buried at Puchevillers British Cemetery in France.
