Henry Jack Cox

Captain, Royal Fusiliers

Henry Jack Cox was born at Upper Norwood and was a student at Alleyn's until 1903. After leaving school, he spent time in Argentina before the outbreak of the First World War prompted him to return home in December 1914. After returning to England, he decided to enlist in the war effort and obtained a commission which saw him join the Royal Fusiliers as a Captain after receiving the necessary training. Henry saw service with the Fusiliers on the Western Front and served for nearly 2 years in France. In 1917, he was preparing his men for the launch of the Third Battle of Ypres at Hooge when he was shot through the head by a German sniper on July 31st 1917. His parents, who lived in Herne Bay, were informed shortly afterwards. He is buried at Hooge Crater cemetery in Belgium.
