Edgar Walter Crampton
2nd Lieutenant, Royal Fusiliers
Edgar Walter Crampton lived at 62 Chados Avenue, Whetstone and was a student at Alleyn's until 1914. He was known to be a talented artist which he later fashioned into a career for himself. When war broke out in August 1914, Edgar decided to join the British Expeditionary Force and was granted a commission. He joined the Royal Fusiliers as a 2nd Lieutenant and served with the regiment in France and Flanders. In 1917, he was serving in Ypres during the third phase of the Third Battle of Ypres which saw operations launched around Poelcappelle on October 9th 1917. This action was intended to half the distance from Broodseinde Ridge to Passchendaele but proved to be a costly failure for the British. Edgar was killed in battle on the first day of the operation and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
