Guy Denny

Private, Bedfordshire Regiment

Guy Denny was a student at Alleyn's until 1905 and joined the war effort in 1915 as part of the Bedfordshire Regiment. He served overseas as a Private in France for over 2 years and was involved in a number of British operations on the Western Front, including the Somme Offensive in 1916. Shortly before the operation, Guy was recommended for a commission but turned down the opportunity, stating that he could not abandon his battalion at such a critical time. After taking part in the Somme operation, Guy continued to serve on the Western Front and he was involved in another major offensive in 1917 when the Bedfordshire Regiment took part in the Arras Offensive. During this offensive, Guy took part in the Battle of Bullecourt, a flanking operation which intended to push the German forces back to their reserve trenches. The operation was success but shortly after the close of the battle, Guy was killed in action after a stray shell exploded near him behind the lines on May 3rd 1917. His loss was felt strongly by his officers and men who could not speak highly enough of him. He is buried at Heninel near Arras.
