Albert Lawrence Doxsey

Albert Lawrence Doxsey studied at Alleyn’s until 1907 and lived in Hendon until the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914. He joined the war effort as part of the Middlesex Regiment and saw action on the Western Front. During this time, his younger brother was also serving overseas with the Honourable Artillery Company. After arriving in France in 1916, Albert took part in a number of British operations, including those on the Somme in July 1916. In November, he was involved in the Battle of the Ancre – the last major operation of the year for the British in 1916. This attack intended to exploit German exhaustion and gain better ground for Allies as they went into 1917. The attack managed to capture ground at Beaumont and south of the Serre but this success was not achieved without the British suffering a significant number of casualties. Unfortunately, Albert was killed on the first day of the battle on November 13^th 1916. He is buried at Serre Road Cemetery No. 1 in France.
