Archibald M. Fraser

Lance Corporal, London Regiment (London Scottish)

Archibald M. Fraser was a student at Alleyn’s and lived in Camberwell before joining the war effort. He was only at Alleyn’s for a short time but won for himself the esteem of his fellow students and masters in this brief period. After the outbreak of war, he decided to enlist in the war effort and joined the London Regiment (London Scottish) after being found fit for service. During his time with the regiment, Archibald and served overseas on the Western Front as a Lance Corporal saw action in France and Flanders. In September 1916, he was serving in France during the second phase of the Battle of the Somme where the British were attempting to gain the high ground in the area in preparation for the general attack that would be launched in mid-September. This operation would become known as the Battle of Ginchy and would see the allies advance on Ginchy and Leuze Wood on September 9^th 1916. Unfortunately, it was during this advance that Archibald was killed in action near Leuze Wood. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing
