Albert E. Gott

2^nd Lieutenant, Royal Warwickshire Regiment

Albert E. Gott was a student at Alleyn’s until 1898 and attended the school with his brother, JH Gott. During his time at the school, Albert was well known for his athletic ability, particularly his talent for long distance running. After the outbreak of the First World War, he decided to enlist in the British Army and was granted a commission in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, receiving the rank of 2^nd Lieutenant once he had completed his officer training. After being gazetted to the regiment, Albert was sent for service overseas on the Western Front and saw action in Flanders and France. In November 1916, he took part in the Battle of the Ancre, the final operation of the Somme Campaign, which looked to exploit the exhausted German forces in the area who had been fighting off offensives since July. Unfortunately, Albert was killed in action on the last day of this battle on November 18^th 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
