Hubert C. A. Gravatt

Lance Corporal, Honourable Artillery Company

Hubert C. A. Gravatt studied at Alleyn’s until 1906 and lived at Beeches Avenue, Carshalton during this time. He joined the war effort as part of the Honourable Artillery Company and served overseas on the Western Front as a Lance Corporal. In September 1915, he was serving with the HAC in Flanders during the Battle of Loos, the biggest British attack of 1915. This battle marked the first use of poison gas by the British and it was hoped that the Allies would be able to break through the German defences, returning the war to one of movement. Unfortunately, the battle was unsuccessful and the British forces involved across the attack sustained a high number of casualties throughout the operation. It was during this attack, which lasted until October 13^th, that Hubert was killed in battle on September 30^th 1915. He is buried at the New Irish Farm Cemetery.
