Richard J. Grieve
Citizen Force
Richard J. Grieve was a student at Alleyn’s until 1895. He moved to South Africa shortly after leaving school and was still abroad when the First World War broke out in August 1914. In order to carry out his duty, he joined the South African Citizen Force. This force was mobilised after the British decision to advance on German South West Africa early on in the war. In 1916, Richard saw action with the force in North West Rhodesia until he contracted Blackwater Fever, a severe form of Malaria, which he later died from.
