Bertram Thorpe Haselgrove

2^nd Lieutenant, London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles)

Bertram Thorpe Haselgrove lived in Westcliffe on Sea and was a student at Alleyn’s until 1896. He enlisted in the British Expeditionary Force in January 1915 and was granted a commission shortly afterwards. Bertram initially served with the Honourable Artillery Company but was transferred to the London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles) after completing his officer training and receiving the rank of 2^nd Lieutenant. During his time with the London Regiment, Bertram served on the Western Front in France and took part in a number of major British operations including the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. He was wounded in this battle but later returned to the front after recovering from his injuries. In 1918, he was serving in France during the Hundred Days Offensive, a series of attacks intended to push Germany out of the country, when was killed in action on September 3^rd 1918. He is buried at Heilly Station Cemetery.
