Alfred William Hubbard
2nd Lieutenant, Royal Welsh Fusiliers
Alfred William Hubbard lived at 78 Arodene Road, Brixton Hill and joined the war effort as part of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers after being granted a commission. After receiving the necessary training, he was awarded the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and was sent for service overseas on the Eastern Front. In 1917, he was serving as a part of the British Mesopotamian Campaign and took part in a series of offensives that pushed back the Ottoman forces and gained ground at Kut. Unfortunately, it was during this advance that Alfred was killed in action on January 25th 1917. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
