Archibald Douglas Hunter

2^nd Lieutenant, London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles)

Archibald Douglas Hunter was a student at Alleyn’s until 1902 and lived at 10 Northanger Road, Streatham with his mother and two brothers, John and Ernest. He joined the war effort as part of the London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles) after being granted a commission. His brothers also joined the war effort shortly after him. After completing officer training, Archibald was granted the rank of 2^nd Lieutenant and was sent for service overseas on the Western Front. In April 1917, he was serving in France and took part in the Battle of Arras which intended to force the German forces off the high ground in the area. It was during this action that Archibald was killed on April 23^rd 1917. His Commanding Officer informed his family of his death shortly afterwards and noted that his loss would be felt strongly by his battalion who considered him to be a very gallant officer. Archibald’s brothers, 2^nd Lieutenant John Hunter and Captain Ernest Hunter, received the news at home in England where they were both recovering from wounds they had received in battle. Unfortunately, the Hunter family suffered another tragic loss just ten days after Archibald’s death when Mrs. Hunter passed away. Archibald is buried at Chili Trench Cemtery in France.
