Sydney Leonard Huntley

Sydney Leonard Huntley

Private, Central Ontario Regiment

Sydney Leonard Huntley lived in West Norwood and was a student at Alleyn’s until 1911. During his time at school, he was a member of the School 1st XI Cricket Team and was the School Gymnastics Champion for 1911. After leaving Alleyn’s, he moved to Canada and was still abroad when the First World War broke out in August 1914. Being away from England did not deter Sydney from joining the war effort and he signed up shortly after the establishment of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After being found fit for service, he joined the Central Ontario Regiment and was sent for service overseas on the Western Front. In 1916, he was serving in France during the Somme Offensive and took part in the final phase of the operation which looked to gain better ground in the area. Shortly after the end of these operations, Sydney was killed in action on November 21st 1916. He is buried at Ste Marie Cemetery, Le Harve.
