Walter Thomas Jacobi
2nd Lieutenant, Royal Lancashire Regiment
Walter Thomas Jacobi was a student at Alleyn’s and lived at 83 Stradella Road. He was prefect from 1907-1909 and was well known for his athletic ability in all departments of games. After leaving school, he was granted a commission and joined the Royal Lancashire Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant. During his time with the regiment, he served overseas on the Western Front and took part in the Battle of the Somme during the final phase of the offensive in October 1917. It was during this action that Walter was wounded in battle. Shortly afterwards, he was transferred back home to England where he was sent to the Research Hospital in Cambridge to recover from his injuries. Unfortunately, he died from his wounds on October 21st 1916. Walter was buried with full military honours at Norwood Cemetery three days later.
