Gilbert M. James
Corporal, Royal Engineers
Gilbert M. James was a student at Alleyn’s until 1907 and joined the war effort as part of the Royal Engineers. During his time with the RE, he served as a Despatch Rider overseas on the Western and Eastern Front, spending two years in France before being transferred to East Asia in 1917. Unfortunately, shortly after transferring to the Eastern Front, Gilbert contracted Malaria and enteric which he later died from on December 2nd 1917. He is buried at Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.
