Leslie W. Jones
Apprentice, Merchant Service
Leslie William Jones was born on 30th December 1900, and left Alleyns in June 1915, aged 14 and a half. He intended to move to Bristol to study farming, but instead he joined the war effort when he entered the Merchant Service as an Apprentice. He served on the ship ‘Foyle’ until December 22nd 1915 when he was washed overboard and drowned in the mid-Atlantic. He was not quite 15 years old. From the age of the World War One AOB Casualties, Leslie was the youngest boy serving to be killed during the war.
With thanks to Alan King, AOB, a volunteer with www.findagrave.com, for information on Leslie's middle name, which was confirmed from Leslie's entry on the 1911 Census.
