Sydney G. E. Jones

Company Sergeant Major, London Regiment (City of London Rifles)

Sydney G. E. Jones was a student at Alleyn’s until 1902 and joined the war effort as part of the London Regiment (City of London Rifles). During his time with the Rifles, he served overseas as a Company Sergeant Major and won the Military Cross in 1916 for his courage and coolness under fire. In early 1917, he was still serving on the Western Front with the Rifles when he was killed at the entrance of his dugout on February 28th 1917. He is buried at the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground.
