Normand Everard Kipling was 20 years old when he joined the war effort. He lived at 11 Rodenhurst Road, Clapham Park with his parents, his two younger brothers, John and Reginald, and his younger sister, Dorothy. He attended Alleyn’s until 1911 before finding employment as a clerk. After the outbreak of war, Normand decided to enlist in the British Territorial Force in November 1915. At this time the physical requirements for enlisting in the Army were still fairly strict though this proved not be a problem for Normand who stood at 6ft 1 ¾ inches, well over the required height of 5ft 6. After being found fit for service, Normand joined the Honourable Artillery Company as a Private and served overseas in France with 1^st Battalion. He served with the HCA for the majority of the war until being killed in action in 1917. After his death, his belongings were sent home to his father in England. For his services in the war Normand was awarded the British War and Victory which was received by his family on his behalf.
