Walter Le Grove

2nd Lieutenant, London Regiment (the Rangers)

Walter Le Grove was a student at Alleyn’s until 1906 and lived with this wife, Leonora, at 87 Lion Street, Walworth before the outbreak of war. He joined the war effort early on as part of the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) and saw service on the Eastern Front and Western Front as a Private.

During his time overseas, Walter continually proved himself as a reliable soldier and natural leader in action, qualities which saw eventually him granted a commission with the Rangers. After completing his officer training, he received the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and joined his new regiment on the Western Front. Walter remained serving on the Western Front until 1918 when he was killed in action on April 25th, shortly after the launch of the German Spring Offensive. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
