Leonard Lee

Leonard Lee was a student at Alleyn’s until 1901. During this time, he lived at 42 Woodwarde Road, East Dulwich with his parents, William and Frances, his four brothers and his sister. After leaving school, Leonard worked as a bank clerk before the outbreak of war encouraged him to enlist in the British Expeditionary Force in December 1915. He joined the London Scottish Regiment and served with 14^th Battalion overseas on the Western Front. In September 1916, shortly after enlisting, Leonard married his wife, Constance Dorothy Lee and the couple had a daughter together which they named Peggy. After the marriage, Leonard returned overseas and continued to serve with the London Scottish until being wounded in 1917 and sent to recover in hospital. During this time, it was unclear whether his injury would see him declared as physically unfit for service. After much deliberating, it was agreed that if Leonard would be willing to return to civil employment and take back his old job at the Union of London & Smith Bank then he would be transferred to the Army Reserve for the remainder of the war. Leonard agreed and he returned home to his wife and daughter at 10 Norbury Crescent.
