Douglas W. Leman

Captain, London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles)

Aged 17, Class VI.B Technical: 'Prefect. A bright, clever boy of much promise'

Douglas W. Leman lived at 125 East Dulwich Grove, Dulwich and was a pupil at from September 1898 until July 1907. He was the son of William Edgar Leman, a Commercial Traveller. Two of his three brothers, Frank and Cyril also attended Alleyn's, but the fourth brother, Harry, did not.

Douglas joined the war effort as part of the London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles) and by 1918 was serving as a Captain on the Eastern Front. During his time overseas, Douglas took part in the British Palestine Operations and was involved in the attacks made to capture Amman. It was during these operations that Douglas was killed in battle on March 28^th 1918. He is commemorated on the Damascus Commonwealth War Memorial.
