Herbert James Lewis

Herbert James Lewis was a student at Alleyn’s until 1903 and lived with his parents at 41 Woodwarde Road, Dulwich during this time. After leaving school, he joined the Civil Service and was living in Margate when the First World War broke out in August 1914. After the announcement of war, Herbert decided to enlist in the British Expeditionary Force and joined the Honourable Artillery Company after being found fit for service. During his time with the HAC, he served as a Private and saw action on the Western Front in France and Flanders. In 1917, he was serving in Belgium during the Third Battle of Ypres when he was killed in action on October 9^th 1917. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
