Leonard Oscar Libby lived at 20 Holmdene Avenue, Herne Hill and attended Alleyn’s School until 1905. After leaving school, he worked as a clerk until deciding to enlist in the British Expeditionary Force in February 1916. After being attested, he joined the Rifle Brigade and served with 8^th Battalion on the Western Front in France. After serving overseas with the brigade throughout 1917, Leonard suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen in December. He later died of his wounds and his belongings were forwarded to his father, William Henry, back home. For his service in the war, Leonard was awarded the British War and Victory Medal which was sent to his family after the end of the conflict.

He is commemorated on his family tombstone in West Norwood Cemetery.
