Age 14, Class IV B: 'Nice boy. Not brilliant, but painstaking.'

Arthur Stephen Lidington was a student at Alleyn’s until 1907. During this time, he lived with his parents, Arthur and Edith, and his brother and sister at 54 Aspinall Road, Brockley. After leaving school, Arthur found work as a clerk before deciding to enlist in the British Expeditionary Force after the outbreak of war in August 1914. After being declared as medically fit for service, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps on September 7^th 1914. Arthur served as a Sergeant with the RAMC and was involved in the major British campaigns at Gallipoli and Salonika during his time overseas. He served as a stretcher bearer at the front and also saw service as a member of GHQ staff. In summer 1917, he contracted Malaria while serving on the Eastern Front but was able to recover. After serving for four years and 181 days, Arthur was demobilised in March 1919.
