Percy Alfred Line

Percy Alfred Line was a student at Alleyn's School until 1901. During this time, he lived at 81 Peckham Rye with his parents, Henry and Louisa, and his brother, Sydney. After leaving school, Percy found work as a clerk but returned to Alleyn's in 1912 when he was made Honorary Secretary of the Old Boys Club. He continued in this role until the outbreak of the First World War encouraged him to enlist in the Army. After being declared as medically fit for service, he was posted to the London Regiment and served overseas on the Western Front in France. In November 1914, after just two months at the front, Percy received a promotion to Corporal. This was quickly followed by another promotion in July 1915 as a training Sergeant. Percy continued to serve on the Western Front in 1916 and was part of the major operations on the Somme from June until September. It was during this time of fierce trench warfare that Percy was killed in action on September 24th 1916. He had served for two years and twenty days overseas. For his service and actions during the war, he was awarded the British War and Victory Medal which was received by his family on his behalf.
