Ernest William Lockey

2^nd Lieutenant, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers)

Ernest William Lockey was a student at Alleyn’s and lived at 36 Dovercourt, Road before the outbreak of the First World War. During his time at school, he was Prefect for Cribb’s and was known by his tutors as an individual of considerable ability and initiative. After leaving school, he was granted a commission and joined the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) as a 2^nd Lieutenant after completing Officer Training. Ernest served overseas on the Western Front with the Royal Fusiliers and took part in a number of British operations including the Somme Offensive in 1916. In September, he was serving at the front shortly after the Battle of Ginchy when he was killed in action on September 10^th. After his death, a fellow-officer wrote home to his parents to inform them that Ernest’s fell heroically in battle, taking out several enemies himself to ensure the safety of his men. He is buried at Delville Wood Cemetery.
