George Harry Lowton
Private, Royal Fusiliers
George Harry Lowton was a student at Alleyn’s until 1914 and joined the war effort as part of the Royal Fusiliers. He served overseas as a Private on the Western Front and saw action in France for 11 months before being transferred to the Ypres area. In 1917, he took part in the Third Battle of Ypres and was involved in the second phase of the offensive in September. This phase of the offensive was intended to push the German forces back and gain more ground as the Allies advanced towards Passchendaele. Unfortunately, it was during this time that George was killed in action on September 9th 1917. He is buried at Zantvoorde British Cemetery.
