John E. Maynard
Major, London Regiment (City of London Rifles)
John E. Maynard was a student at Alleyn’s until 1900 and joined the war effort as part of the London Regiment (City of London Rifles). During his time with the Rifles, he saw nearly three years of continuous service in France and received the Military Cross in 1917 for his gallantry in active operations. John was known as a ‘very keen soldier’ and by 1918 he had been rapidly promoted to the rank of Major. Unfortunately, just a few months before the end of the war, John was wounded in battle on August 23rd 1918 as he led his battalion in action. He was transferred from the front to Netley Hospital but later died of his injuries on October 17th 1918. He is buried at Netley, Hants.
