Thomas Glenmore Kennion Lord Minty
Wireless Operator, Mercantile Marine
Thomas Glenmore Kennion Lord Minty lived at 311a Milkwood Road, Herne Hill and was a student at Alleyn’s until 1916. After leaving school, he joined the war effort as part of the Mercantile Marine and served as a Wireless Operator on the SS ‘Mirto’. On August 16th 1918, Thomas was serving on the ship when it was torpedoed by German forces. This was the result of Germany’s resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare against Britain and her allies. It is presumed that Thomas drowned on this day. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
