Harry Newman

Lance Corporal, Army Service Corps

Harry Newman was a student at Alleyn’s until 1900. During this time, he lived with his parents, Henry and Emily, at 2 Milkwood Road, Herne Hill. After the outbreak of war in August 1914, he decided to enlist in the war effort and joined the Army Service Corps after being found physically fit for service. Harry joined the Service Corps as part of the British Mechanical Transport section and was attached to 69^th Siege Battery Ammunition Column in France. As part of the MT section, Harry was responsible for delivering equipment and ammunition across the front and he served in this role until the end of the war. He ended his military service as a Lance Corporal after receiving a promotion in February 1917. After the end of the conflict, he received the British War and Victory Medal for his wartime service.
