Roland D. Nightingale

Roland D. Nightingale was a student at Alleyn's until 1917 and lived with his parents and three brothers at 26 Rollscourt Avenue, Herne Hill. He joined the war effort shortly after leaving school and was granted a commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery. After completing his officer training, he was awarded the rank of Lieutenant and joined the RGA overseas for the remainder of the war. In 1918, his gallantry and devotion to duty in the face of the enemy resulted in him being awarded the Military Cross.
