John F. Parker
Engine Room Artificer (4th Class), Royal Navy
John F. Parker lived at 3 Carnac Street, West Norwood and was a student at Alleyn’s from 1905-08. He joined the war effort as part of the Royal Navy and served as an Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on HMS ‘Bulwark’. In 1914, HMS ‘Bulwark’ was attached to the British Channel Fleet and was responsible for conducting patrols in the English Channel. On November 26th she was anchored at Sheerness when she was destroyed by a large internal explosion. A total of 736 men were killed onboard, including John. He is commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
