Arthur Cecil Paterson
2nd Lieutenant, Durham Light Infantry
Arthur Cecil Paterson lived at 79 Danercroft Road, Herne Hill and was a student at Alleyn’s until 1915. During his time at school, he was Cribb’s House Captain and was known to be an efficient and organised individual. After leaving school at the age of 17, Arthur decided to join the war effort and was granted a commission. Following the completion of his officer training he joined the Durham Light Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant and was sent for service overseas on the Western Front. Arthur saw action in France during the war as a Lewis Gun and Intelligence Officer until he was killed in action on April 22nd 1918 during the German Spring Offensive. He is buried at Bouzincourt Cemetery.
