Harold Stanley Percy attended Alleyn’s until 1910. During this time, he lived with his aunt, Louisa, his mother, Mary, and his sister, Dorothy. After leaving school, he found work as an engineer and moved with his family to Canobie Road, Honour Oak. When war broke out in August 1914, Harold quickly decided to join the war effort. After being attested, he joined the Royal Field Artillery on September 8^th 1914 at the age of 17. During his time with the RFA, Harold served overseas with the 6^th London Brigade in France and showed a natural ability for leadership in the field. This resulted in him receiving a promotion to Corporal in 1915 and being granted a commission in December 1916. Harold’s devotion to duty and bravery in battle was also recognised when he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, a decoration for gallantry in the field. At the end of the conflict, Harold also received the 1914-15 Star and the British War and Victory Medal for his service.
