Charles Pethebridge
Acting Sergeant, London Regiment (Queen’s Westminster Rifles)
Charles Pethebridge was a student at Alleyn’s until 1905 and lived at 57 Elmwood Road, Herne Hill during this time. He joined the war effort shortly after the outbreak of war in August 1914 and was attached to the London Regiment (Queen’s Westminster Rifles) after being found fit for service. During his time with the regiment, Charles saw service overseas on the Western Front where he proved that he was a determined and skilful soldier, even in the most trying circumstances. These qualities later saw him promoted to Lance Corporal in December 1915 and later to Acting Sergeant. Charles continued to serve on the Western Front until the conflict came to a close in November 1918.
