Douglas Leman Reid

2^nd Lieutenant, Essex Regiment

Douglas Leman Reid lived at 163 Auckland Hill, West Norwood and was first educated at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School. After leaving Dulwich Hamlet, he joined Alleyn’s and studied at the school until 1912. When the First World War broke out in August 1914, he decided to enlist in the war effort and was granted a commission. Douglas received the rank of 2^nd Lieutenant after completing his officer training and was sent for service overseas on the Western Front. In 1917, he was involved in a number of operations during the Third Battle of Ypres including the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. On September 21^st 1917, he was killed in action while leading an attack at Vimy Ridge. His loss was felt greatly by his men who thought of him as a good soldier and friend. His Commanding Officer noted that he ‘would have done splendid work had he been spared’. Douglas is buried at Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay.
