Howard Withers Roberts

t/Section Lieutenant, Royal Fusiliers

Howard Withers Roberts was a student at Alleyn's until 1906 and joined the war effort as part of the Royal Fusiliers. During his time with the Fusiliers, Howard served as a 2nd Lieutenant and was involved in a number of operations against the enemy. In 1916, he was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry after he fought fiercely against an enemy attack, repeatedly crossing fire-swept ground in order to maintain communication. The next day, he immediately began to tend to the wounded and brought many of them to safety. All of this was done under heavy shell fire. By the end of the war, Howard had been promoted and was serving as a temporary Section Lieutenant.
