Arthur Douglas Robertson

Private, London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles)

Arthur Douglas Robertson was a student at Alleyn’s until 1902 and joined the war effort as part of the London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles). During his time with the Regiment, he served as a Rifleman overseas on the Western Front and saw action in France. In July 1916, he took part in the major British offensive on the Somme and was involved in the Battle of Gommecourt on the first day of the operation. This attack was intended as a diversion to protect the northern flank of Fourth Army’s main attack. It was during this battle that Arthur was severely wounded in action on July 1^st. He was sent home to England to recover from his injuries but later died at a hospital in Cambridge on August 14^th 1916. He is buried at Tottenham Cemetery.
