Cecil Edward Russell
Rifleman, London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles)
Cecil Edward Russel lived at 64 Elfindale Road, Herne Hill and attended Alleyn until 1897. He joined the war effort as part of the London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles) and saw service overseas on the Western Front. During his time with the London Regiment, Cecil served as a Rifleman in France and took part in the Battle of the Somme in September 1916. He was killed in action on September 13th 1916, two days before the launch of the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
