Herbert Hilton Scull

Rifleman, London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade)

Herbert Hilton Scull was a student at Alleyn’s until 1895 and enlisted in the war effort shortly after leaving school. After being attested, he joined the London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) and was sent for service overseas on the Western Front. In 1916, he took part in the Battle of the Somme and was involved in the fighting at Leuze Wood on September 6th-10th. This fighting formed part of the Battle of Ginchy which aimed to gain better ground in preparation for a more general attack in mid-September. Unfortunately, Herbert was killed in action during this attack on September 10th 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
