Leonard C. Shinkfield

Private, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers)

Leonard C. Shinkfield lived at 6 Gilkes Crescent, East Dulwich and attended Alleyn’s with his brothers, Herbert and Eric, until 1913. After the outbreak of the First World War, Herbert, Leonard and Eric decided to enlist in the war effort and Leonard and Eric joined the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). During his time with the Regiment, Leonard served overseas on the Western Front and saw action in France as a Private. In 1916, he was serving with the Fusiliers near Hebuterne when his brother, Eric, was killed in action on May 29^th. Just over a month later, Leonard took part in the Battle of the Somme and was involved in the fierce fighting at Gommecourt on 1^st July. Unfortunately, it was during this attack that Leonard was killed in action. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
